The auspicious appearance day of Lord Narasimha, the half-lion, half-man incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is celebrated as Sri Narasimha Jayanti. On Shukla Chaturdashi, the fourteenth day of the brilliant fortnight in the month of Vaishakha, at dusk, Lord Narasimha appeared.
In order to shield His beloved devotee Prahlada from the persecutions of his demon father Hiranyakashipu, the Supreme Lord manifested as Narasimha. After undergoing intense penances, Hiranyakashipu gained the blessing of Lord Brahma, which prevented him from being killed by any living being created by Brahma (including demigods, demons, humans, or animals), in or out of a dwelling, during the day or night, on the ground or in the air, with a weapon, or by any living being, dead or alive.
Given this unique blessing, Hiranyakashipu grew incredibly strong. He established his domination over everyone by subduing all directions. He had a negative attitude towards Lord Vishnu and His followers. Conversely, from the start of his existence, his son Prahlada was a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Thus, Hiranyakashipu attempted to kill his son multiple times using various means, but the Lord always came to his aid.
Finally, the Lord emerged from a pillar in a unique shape that is half-lion, half-human; this form is neither animal nor human. In the evening (neither day nor night), in the assembly hall doorway (neither inside nor outside any residence), He killed Hiranyakashipu by holding the demon in His lap (neither land nor sky), and using His nails to rip the demon’s body to pieces (neither by a weapon nor by any entity – dead or alive). Thus, the Lord fulfilled every requirement of Brahma’s gift and killed Hiranyakashipu with ease.
The Almighty demonstrated through this delightful hobby that no one can outsmart Him or deceive Him. No matter how smart or strong a person is, nothing can stop the Lord from killing them. In a same vein, nobody can kill someone that the Lord wishes to save.
