The Rath Yatra is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the city of Puri, Odisha. It typically begins on the Dwitiya Tithi (second day) of Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Ashadha, which generally falls in June or July according to the lunar calendar.

With roots in ancient times, Rath Yatra has been celebrated for generations. The celebration has its origins in the Vaishnavite traditions of Hinduism, especially in relation to Lord Jagannath, the universe’s supreme deity. The festival honors Lord Jagannath’s yearly pilgrimage from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, which is thought to be the residence of their maternal aunt, along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.
